About the Event

“Your Garden Story”

Four ceramic pottery garden ornament workshops, plus a final potluck event. Supported by the LifeLong Arts Program of the Indiana Arts Commission and Arts for Lawrence. This workshop is for ages 65+

Instructors: Tammeron and Anna Francis.

Dates: All workshops are on Sunday from 2-4pm. May 5, May 12, May 19, May 26, June 16

Cost: $50. Includes 5 dates, all materials, clay, and live instruction.

Your Garden's Story involves a series of four workshops and a final pot-luck storytelling event. Participants do not need to have a garden. The garden that participants will reflect on in their ceramic work and talk about in the final session could be their own garden, an imaginary –ideal – or a projected garden.

Session 1 - May 5: Clay basics, hand building with slabs. A garden marker for marking planted seeds.

Session 2 - May 12: Hand Building and surface decoration. Small planter or a berry bowl – hand built.

Session 3-4 - May 19 & May 26: Garden pole sculpture (two sessions). While both the berry bowl and the garden markers will tell us something about your garden, the garden poles should tell your garden's story with greater depth. A garden poll consists of a metal rod on which a series of sculptural pieces are inserted on top of each other. The garden poll could function as a story or totem-like poll, each inserted part of the sculpture being there to remind the storyteller of a chapter in the story of their garden. Elements might include frequently visiting birds, adjacent trees and their character, and visiting animals, wild and domestic.

Session 5 - June 16: Presenting results of fired works and potluck, including berries and other greens from the garden.
