About the Event
Class Ages: 6+ unless accompanied by a parent.
Notes: Dress comfortably.
Put a kite into the air to celebrate the 4th of July Holiday! We will be making our own small versions of a sled kite that flies in light winds and has no tail. We won’t need a windy day to have this kite carried out of our hands into the sky – and you can make it yourself! This workshop will provide all the necessary materials and instruction. Materials include plastic (from compostable plant starch), bamboo sticks, tape, and a little bit of string to fly it!
Instruction: by Gary Schmitt, one of the current Resident Artists for Arts for Lawrence, and who was previously awarded “Best Sled Kite” at the Smithsonian Annual Kite Fly, Washington, D.C. As you complete the kite-making, you can also decorate your kite with markers and add tails. Weather permitting, at the conclusion of the workshop we will have our own “Mini Kite Fly Festival” on the Plaza at the Fort Ben Cultural Campus, just outside of the Visual Arts Center!
